Cendol, anyone ?

I have a chance to taste the world’s best Cendol here is Melaka !! If you don’t know what cendol is, it is basiacally the dessert’s with basic ingredients that consist of shaved ice, coconut milk, starch noodles with green food coloring (usually sourced from the pandan leaf), and palm sugar. Red beans, glutinous rice, grass jelly, and creamed corn. It’s delicious !

In Day 3, we are going to choose the right keyword for the topic that you have chosen in Day 2.

Before you start a blog, you want to know how fierce the competition is. In other word, how many competitor who are blog the same topic like your do.  This will also tell us how easy to rank in Google and other major search engine.

Well, this rules only apply if you are planning to blog for profit. However, if your plan is to blog for fun as a hobby or just to fill your free time, by all means go ahead and nothing is wrong with that.  In that  case, skip this step as it is not required.  Anyway, there is no harm if you follow along as you will learn the right and crucial way in setting up a profitable blog.

In the First Test, we are going to check how profitable is the niche or topic that you’ve chosen. Head over to https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal to launch the Google Adwords Keyword Tool that will  give you an estimate idea of your keyword searches volume. Enter the keyword in the box and hit the “Get Keyword Idea” button. As a rule of thumb, you are aiming for keyword that received at least 500 average search volume monthly. Anything  lesser than 500 is too low and not worth your effort in optimizing the blog/website.  The huge volume is normally very competitive and therefore try to avoid it.  Please get about 5 keywords that have more than 500 average searches.

In the Second Test, you are going to perform Google Competition Test using the keyword that you’ve selected in the first test to discover the untapped niche which is profitable.

To start Second Test, go to www.Google.com and type in the keyword with quotes (”") for your topic. Eg, if you plan to start a blog about Cat Training then , you will need to type “Cat Training” in Google.

Look at the result in the top right-hand corner for the our keyword.  Basically, you are looking for total number of indexed sites that is less than 20,000.  Total result of 100,000 is too competitive and quite difficult to outrank existing Top 10 sites.  Repeat for all 5 keyword that you’ve selected in Test 1. Drop the keyword which is too competitive (>50K).  If you get huge number of  results for all 5 keywords, you may need to go back to First Test and pick another keyword. Try to refine your keyword to be more specific eg. Persian Cat Training instead of Cat Training. As you have narrowed down your keyword, your competitor will be lesser as well and thus easier for your site to rank better.

At the end of the 2 tests, you’ll at least 2-3 keywords that you need to optimized for. You may struggling to complete these test but it is important to build your profitable blog. Take your time to complete these task and do let me know if you face any problem.
